How to Plan a Perfect Road Trip?

July 17th, 2018 by

Taking a road trip can be a great way to explore your city/state or any other destination. Although your car can take you places, you need some planning to ensure the trip becomes an enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to plan a perfect road trip.

Set Expectations

Before you set out on the journey, you need to find out everyone’s expectations for the road trip. Have discussions to find out what everyone expects from the road trip. Some of the questions you can ask are:

  • Do you plan to take regular halts on the way for sightseeing or do you want to reach the destination faster and then indulge in sightseeing and other activities?
  • Will you drive only during daytime or will you drive even at night?
  • Will you stay in hotels or apartment rentals?
  • How will you split the fuel expenses?
  • Will you stick to a schedule until you reach the destination?
  • Who will take turns driving?

It’s good to have an idea of what everyone expects to ensure you can create a plan in which no one is frustrated or required to make compromises. It is better to know beforehand than assuming everyone is on the same page.

Keep Hard Copies of Maps, Directions and Brochures

We live in a digital age where most things like maps and brochures are available on your mobile device. However, smartphone technology is not always reliable and you need to keep hard copies of maps and brochures that will be helpful if  mobile technology refuses to function due to some reason.

Check Your Car and Tires Completely Before Hitting the Road

Your car needs to be in good condition to support your road trip. Get your car thoroughly checked out at the garage. Perform any emergency repairs and replacements to ensure your car is in the best health for the road trip. Some of the things you need to pay attention to are the levels of all fluids, as well as if the battery is in good condition and can hold a charge. Don’t forget to check the air pressure in all tires including the spare tire. Check the treads on all tires to see if they are deep enough for good road grip.

Make Hotel Reservations in Advance

If you have planned halts during a road trip, make sure you book the hotels in advance. This will ensure you don’t have to spend the night in the car. When you are driving long distances, you need a sound sleep at night to keep your body and mind fresh for the next day. By making hotel reservations you will save yourself from hopping from one hotel to another in search of accommodation in an unknown area, as well as saving money by booking ahead of time.

Give Yourself Enough Time to Plan

There is nothing worse than rushing into everything on a road trip. Spend enough time researching sightseeing opportunities on the route and also at the destination. Find out about the local cuisine and exciting places that you need to visit on the road trip.

A perfect plan for a road trip will ensure you enjoy it to the fullest and get the most out of your vacation.
